Winterim 2017Winterim is the centerpiece of Lawrence Academy's commitment to immersive education -- learning in the concrete and physical world of activity as a complement to learning in the vicarious and symbol-filled world of traditional classrooms. The 2018 catalog, listing this year's course offerings, is posted online (PDF at right). You will also find the 2018 Winterim Intro and Sign-up Forms here.

Note: Individual programs are subject to change.

The Winterim program is an opportunity to explore a broader range of subjects and skills than is otherwise possible in a regular classroom. In that spirit, student reporters assist the LA communications staff in covering their classmates' experiences, while gaining some knowledge of their own.

Off to Western Mass

by Zachary May ’17

Springfield, MA – On Wednesday, March 16, the Winterim News Team took a trip to Springfield, and had the opportunity to cover the AHL’s Springfield Falcons morning skate and interview some former NHL players.

The day started with an early wake up call and had the team off campus by 7:00 a.m. However, a Starbucks run helped perk the team up for the long drive to Springfield.

Once in the Mass Mutual Center, the News Team was given a tour around the arena and was able to go into the press box to check out their evening vantage point. As the players made their way to the ice, so did the team, where they were able to capture footage from the away team bench.

The game is so fast from that level and the crew got some great close up shots of the action. Meanwhile, players skated by and said hello and it was a great opportunity for the Winterim News Team to get some experience with getting action shots to use as “b-roll” in the eventual video.

After morning skate, Zach May ’17 had the privilege to interview current Springfield Falcon (and former Boston Bruin) Craig Cunningham. The forward gave the team great answers and was very friendly.

After the interview, and following a terrific lunch, the News Team went to the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden located just a couple of blocks away from the home of the Falcons.

There were some great statues depicting many of Seuss' stories and the News Team took advantage of the photo opportunities as they enjoyed their time outdoors.

When the away team arrived at the building, Winterim news team member Khloe Hartner ’17 had the opportunity to interview another former Boston Bruin, Justin Florek, currently a forward for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Like Cunningham (Florek's former teammate), Justin gave the News Team some insight on how he likes playing in New England as well as his relationships with some NHL players.

After getting the interviews and capturing plenty of footage and photos, the news team was able to watch the game in the press box upstairs.

Overall, the day was a huge success getting great learning experience and a lot of fun along the way.
