Heading into the fourth week of spring term classes here on the quad, we are already looking at Cum Laude Day and Grandparents’ Day this coming Wednesday, when we celebrate excellent scholarship and service and share LA with the people who have helped our students be their best selves.

Among the awards at Cum Laude is the Alumni Greater Good Award. Just last Thursday at the AOL gathering in New York, Head of School Dan Scheibe, finally got a chance to present the 2014 Greater Good Award to Andre Eaton ’87, who was unable to be on campus last April. As you can see from the video, Andre’s years at LA instilled in him a love of people, a desire to give back, and a commitment to live by the words, “From those to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Next week at Cum Laude Day, we honor another LA graduate with the 2015 Greater Good Award. Kris Ansin ’03 has been giving back to the world, and especially to the people of Mali, through the Mali Health Organizing Project of which he is Executive Director. The project’s mission is to reduce maternal and child mortality in resource-poor communities in West Africa.

As did Andre and Kris, today’s LA students have been learning lessons about excellence and being their best selves through the curriculum, community service opportunities, Winterim, and special assemblies where we feature speakers who are making a difference. This past Wednesday, we heard from Sanjit “Bunker” Roy, the founder of Barefoot College, the only college in India where traditional knowledge and practical skills of the poor are given more importance and priority than paper degrees or qualifications. If you would like to learn more about Bunker Roy and Barefoot College, check out his TED Talk. We also did our own short video on Bunker at LA, where he was very well received and got a standing ovation!

BTW: The Relay for Life is on campus this weekend. Students have been working hard to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Cancer survivor Harry Reisman ‘75, who sent us a video urging the community to participate, will be back on campus to speak to students about his journey. As always, alumni, parents, and friends are invited to visit us in Groton anytime – come see a one-act play, a music or dance performance, or an athletic contest. All the links below will inform you about dates and times. Please Note: Registration for Reunion 2015 is up and running on the LA website. We're all excited to see folks back on June 5 & 6. I would also like to invite any interested alumni to attend our final Alumni Council meeting of the year, either in person or by video conference. The meeting will be in the Media Conference Center, Wednesday, May 6, 7-8:30 p.m. Please let me know if you are interested!
