GROTON, Mass. — The poster for LA Theatre’s performances of "Macbeth" tells audiences they’re in for some severe tragedy.
Meanwhile, the Folger Shakespeare Library explains of the play:
“Macbeth,” set primarily in Scotland, mixes witchcraft, prophecy, and murder. Three “Weïrd Sisters” appear to Macbeth and his comrade Banquo after a battle and prophesy that Macbeth will be king and that the descendants of Banquo will also reign. When Macbeth arrives at his castle, he and Lady Macbeth plot to assassinate King Duncan, soon to be their guest, so that Macbeth can become king.
LA Director of Theatre Anthony Giovino added, “‘Macbeth’ is the story of a soldier who, upon hearing an alluring prophecy of his own glory, takes fate into his own hands and uses whatever violent means necessary to achieve his destiny of becoming King.”
As you might surmise, and unlike many of the group’s sunnier productions, this exciting classic may differ from family fare and perhaps very appropriate for the year’s spookiest, scariest season.
After all, the famous line, “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes…” is found in Macbeth.
“This production contains elements of blood, violence, strobe light effects, and theatrical haze and may be inappropriate for young children,” explained Mr. Giovino.
