My Experience as an International Student at Lawrence Academy

My Experience as an International Student at Lawrence Academy

By Mise Hirose ‘22

Hi everyone! My name is Mize Hirose, and I am a senior boarding student from Tokyo, Japan.

For me, Lawrence Academy has been more than just a high school. It is an environment where students and faculty welcome you with open arms. Our remarkable academics, legendary spirit, and the inclusive diversity that LA offers allows me to grow. This community supports me to take risks to truly challenge myself. Whether that risk involves climbing Mount Monadnock, joining new clubs, applying for honors classes, performing for the talent show, or being a member of a varsity team – the opportunities are endless. At LA, I am provided with the chance to explore new interests.

Being 6,700 miles away from home and my family, the feeling of homesickness is inevitable. However, being in a community where your advisor becomes your second parent, your roommate becomes your sibling, and the faculty members are your neighbors, it’s impossible to feel alone. There’s always someone available to listen to me whenever I need help. On the weekends, there’s often lots of unique activities on campus planned by our community. Multiple shuttles go to Boston, nearby malls and restaurants. Being from Japan, I was given the opportunity to go to [Japanese] restaurants, which made me feel more comfortable in a foreign country and reminded me of home.

During my first year at LA, I joined LA Singers and had the opportunity to perform for graduation. This experience gave me the strength to broaden my horizons and be inspired to try new things. One short year later, I had the confidence to perform a song for the annual talent show. The support of the students and faculty members allows you to simply take risks. This year I hold a leadership position as a Spartan Leader with an International residential focus. I helped the incoming international students adapt to an unfamiliar country. I was excited to share my passion for LA and inspire them to get involved in everything our community offers. Being a proctor in the dorm, I can assure you that fellow students are accessible for help in addition to faculty members. When I was a new incoming sophomore, older students helped me feel comfortable and supported. I intend on carrying on the tradition of inclusivity on which LA prides itself.

Being an international student did not inhibit my ability to form meaningful connections with students from various backgrounds. At LA, I’ve met some of my best friends from all over the country and the world. During breaks and weekends, they’ve exposed me to new traditions which have widened my perspective on the world. I carved my first pumpkin last Halloween! I’ve seen new places and shared my culture with my new friends.

LA gives you the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and create lifelong friendships.
