My Top Three Favorite Traditions at Lawrence Academy

My Top Three Favorite Traditions at Lawrence Academy

By Julia Schuster ‘23

Hi everyone! My name is Julia Schuster. I am a junior day student at Lawrence Academy. There are so many great traditions at Lawrence Academy, but today I want to share my personal top three.

#1: Mountain Day

One of LA's oldest traditions is Mountain Day. Every September, the entire Lawrence Academy community takes a break from school and travels to New Hampshire to hike Mount Monadnock. The excitement starts the week before when Mr. Moore, decked out in his hiking apparel, makes his annual Mountain Day announcement at assembly. This year was even more meaningful as it was the first time in almost two years that our community was all together in person. This is a perfect way to start the school year with the amazing views and the all-school photo at the summit!

#2 Rise Against Hunger

One of my favorite parts about being a Spartan is participating in the Rise Against Hunger annual meal-packaging event each January. This is a hands-on event to benefit people all over the world. What I love about this tradition is that we stand side by side with our ISL neighbor the Groton School and Groton Dunstable Regional High School students. Together we help pack 10,000 meals during our annual event. The feeling we all have working together is extraordinary!

#3 Spoon Hunt

Finally, my third favorite tradition here at LA is Spoon Hunt. The name can be deceiving! It does involve a spoon, but it is really one big game of tag. For one week every fall, students and faculty are strategizing, sprinting, and hiding so they can tag the person listed on their spoon while trying to avoid getting tagged out themselves. This tradition always brings excitement and competitiveness to campus, but you always end up having fun and meeting new friends. When on campus, ask any LA student about Spoon Hunt and they will share their stories about one of LA’s greatest traditions.

Thank you for reading my blog! Maybe we will meet at the next LA Spoon Hunt 2022!
