"Lucky, fortunate, present, privileged to experience these things..."
by John Bishop
GROTON, Mass. — During his first Monday assembly back from sabbatical, Head of School (HOS) Dan Scheibe spoke to what he most missed at Lawrence Academy during his time away.
Things Mr. Scheibe Most Missed
- I missed that descent into RMPAC (the Richardson-Mees Performing Arts Center), particularly on the first day when many people don't think that's the actual way you get down to RMPAC. and then over the course of the fall, people figuring out the various hacks to get them out of here in a pretty efficient way.
- I missed the sun setting over the Quad in the Schoolhouse, probably the last day of summer or the first day of fall.
- I missed the view out over the turf field to the root 40 fields during peak foliage.
- I missed Arts Week, particularly the first event in the [Williams] gallery when all of the ninth grade and honor's work was being shown. There's a lot of food and energy.
- I missed the action. I even missed exam assessment week, the action over at Ansin, the academic office, and people getting serious about office hours.
- I missed the great Winterim assignment reveal whenever it happens in the first week of December, and I like the explosive energy that comes from that.
- I missed everything holiday: holiday concert, holiday dinner, holiday tourneys.
"You were all lucky, fortunate, present, privileged to experience these things," Mr. Scheibe told a packed RMPAC. " What an amazing opportunity!
"In missing those things, literally missing them, but also missing them in my heart, you also realize how much you love something."
Onward
Dan then spoke to what he's most looking forward to this January, February, and March.
- The back and forth between the Grant Rink and the [Stone] athletic center and all the games going on in both locations.
- That first day you notice that the days are actually getting longer and that will happen before the end of this month that promise you.
- And then the whole Winterim runup, where we figured out how to make the first last week of February and the first weeks of March not miserable.
"All that stuff is important," added the HOS. " It's all fun, but fun is just a 'pointer' to show you where the love and energy are coming from.
"And hopefully, there's something in there, either that I listed or didn't list, that plugs you in and drives you."
Stay warm, LA!
