On MLK Jr. Day, LA gathered in community service
GROTON, Mass. — On Monday, January 19, approximately 35 Lawrence Academy community members came together to prepare care packages and blankets for those in need, all in honor of MLK.
This particular tradition has continued for over three years and is centered on LA’s annual focus on a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Wednesday, January 21, Asst. Dean of Students Jaime Schulze commented on how these events tied into the 2025-2026 focus quote:
“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
“Moments in our community like this make it really special,” said Ms. Schulze.
And despite the school community having the day off from classes, the ability to come together highlights LA’s values.
“Look around: We have alums, students, faculty - all working together, and this is our time to connect,” Asst. Head of School Raquel Majeski said during the event.

Members of the school engaged with each other, and around 100 care packages were created for organizations, including Transitions at Devens, which specializes in aiding victims of intimate partner violence, and the Nashoba Soup Kitchen.
“Ensuring that both organizations get the supplies they need” was a priority of Dean of Students Dennis Canty, and with the community's support, 60 packages were made in the first 15 minutes.
Finally, volunteers spent the rest of the event creating 40 unique blankets for unstably housed children in our communities.
