3 Tips on Navigating the Independent School Admissions Process

By Abby Remis ‘23

Hello! My name is Abby Remis, and I am a junior boarding student from North Andover, Massachusetts. I am very involved on Lawrence Academy’s campus: I am a member of the Elm Tree Society for lead tour guides, a dorm proctor, member of the Moral Courage Task Force, the leader of the Jewish Club, and a tour guide. I know that may sound like a lot of stuff that I am involved in, but I promise, it is a lot of fun!

I was once in the same position as you. I was an anxious kid who was deciding what schools to visit and learn about. It can be stressful and even scary, but I am here to let you in on three tips on how to manage the application process and find the school that is the right fit for you.

Tip #1:

Do your research. Personally, Lawrence Academy tends to be a perfect fit for so many students because of our equal balance of academics, arts, and athletics. So, make sure wherever you are looking, applying, or even touring, that the school you are looking at has your interests. Whether that be theatre (like me!), any level of sports (ranging from thirds to varsity teams), or advanced academic classes.

Tip #2:

Be yourself. The admissions team at LA does an amazing job of seeing which prospective students would be a good fit for our school! If you are not being yourself during any point at LA, the true version of you will never enjoy the experience or shine through. Be honest! That way you can also picture yourself here. It is an amazing community, and we want you to be a part of it – the best version of you.

Tip #3:

Choose what feels right. In the end, Lawrence Academy wants you to be happy. This decision is about you and your education, not just academically, but socially as well. At LA, we are an amazing and welcoming community. You will be exposed to numerous opportunities that are unique to our school, for example: traveling abroad, performing at Carnegie Hall, or even building lifelong relationships.

So, to wrap it up, regardless of where you are looking and what you decide, the choice is yours. It is ultimately about you. Choose the place that fits all of your criteria, be yourself, and choose the school that makes you happy. I hope that that place is LA, and I hope to welcome you soon to the Elm Tree Shaded Hillside.
