Groton, MA – Lawrence Academy is pleased to announce 2017’s J. William Mees Visiting Scholar, Francis Gary Powers Jr.

Mr. Powers, who will be on campus working with the LA history department and students Feb. 6-7, founded Washington, DC's Cold War Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. There will also be a public presentation by Mr. Powers on Monday, Feb. 6, in the Richardson-Mees Performing Arts Center (RMPAC).

Mr. Powers' father, United States Air Force Captain Francis Gary Powers, was a CIA pilot whose spy plane was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission over Soviet Union airspace, precipitating the 1960 U-2 incident. The recent Steven Spielberg film Bridge of Spies, starring Tom Hanks, documents this seminal moment in 20th century history; the movie will be shown on campus prior to Mr. Powers' visit. Mr. Powers founded the Cold War Museum to honor his father.

Powers' visit is made possible by the J. William Mees Visiting Scholar Endowment Fund. Established in 2010 and named for the longtime former faculty member, the fund provides the means for Lawrence Academy students to have firsthand opportunities to learn what professionals do in their fields and how they go about being successful. Previous Mees Visiting Scholars include:

2015-16 Dr. Peter M. Groffman, professor, researcher
2014-15
Lin-Manuel Miranda, composer, lyricist, actor
2013-14 Dar Williams, singer/songwriter; Dr. Tim Fukawa-Connelly and Dr. Adam Boucher, mathematicians
2012-13 Taylor Mali, poet
2011-12 Andres Dubus III, author
