Summer Enrichment Program for International Students
Objective
Lawrence Academy offers two-, four-, six-, or eight-week programs that provide students, ages 10–15, with an immersion experience into American English and culture. Our program gives international students the opportunity to practice and improve their English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing while gaining knowledge of American culture and history. The program is designed for an enrollment of up to 30 boys and girls who will come to Lawrence Academy from outside of the United States. The program also provides visits, information, and formal interviews with independent preparatory secondary schools in the region for
interested students.
Program Structure Overview
Lawrence Academy custom designs its program to meet the needs of each group; length of stay, dates of visit, and academics, and activities are tailored to meet the needs of each group. Flexibility in our programs allows all groups to get the most out of their experience at Lawrence Academy Summer Programs. All of our programs allow students to be a part of our signature Day Camps program. We offer over 30 one-week programs in a variety of areas. Each student participates in a camp of his/her choice in an effort to make the experience more personalized. Students spend either a full- or half-day in camp depending on their program. The classroom instruction is provided by experienced Lawrence Academy teachers and, where possible, by native speakers. The evening enrichment program will focus on activities designed to allow students to use their English skills while discussing a variety of topics. Each day will conclude with supervised evening study hours.
Classroom Instruction
The academic classroom time is divided into five sections: grammar, reading, writing, American culture, and conversation. The division of skills and topics allows for developmentally appropriate class length as well as focused study on problem areas. Each small class of 10–12 students will allow for students to receive personal attention and to have more opportunities to ask questions of the teacher. Putting the students' speaking skills into practice is a key focus on the classroom instruction. Through the use of interactive activities, such as role playing, student presentations, and daily discussions, students will gain the confidence they need to approach their American peers in their daily interactions.
Camp Instruction
Students will be given an opportunity to choose the camp activities in which they will participate with American students. The camps will serve to provide the students with an opportunity to improve their communications skills while enjoying social time with American students. The programs offered change weekly, allowing student to try many different activities. Activities include: tennis, basketball, soccer, baseball, robotics, science discovery, nature exploration, theater, art, music, swimming, photography, and computers, baseball, lacrosse, softball, field hockey, cooking, dance, outdoor adventure, chess, writing, and many more.
Evening Enrichment
Students assemble in small groups of 5-7 to participate in hands-on activities that demand individual participation and language practice. The activities will be experimental endeavors that allow students to explore a wider range of subjects and skills than is possible in our academic program. The range of activities will vary. For example, students may capture and scientifically observe dragonflies, prepare traditional New
England cuisine, or create and edit short films.
Weekend Program
Weekends allow the students to travel throughout the New England area to explore American historical, cultural, and recreational sites. Each weekend provides a mix of these types of trips to ensure that students find their visits enjoyable as well as educational.
Prep School Visits
For those students interested in attending high school in the United States, the opportunity is provided for them to visit and interview with the admission’s staff from Lawrence Academy and of over 25 elite preparatory schools during their stay. Experienced admissions personnel explain and guide the students through the application and admissions process.
