It’s Easier Than You Think

Our purpose is to educate and support people to make sustainable choices in order to create a future that is healthier, cleaner, more efficient, and financially stable.

What LA is

  • Geothermal buildings: Ansin Academic Building and Elm Tree Hall
  • Food scraps are given to local pig farmer
  • Organic fertilizers are used for fields and grassy areas
  • All dorms use compact florescent light bulbs
  • Student-led Go Green Club
  • Twelve students performed a full energy audit of two buildings in March 2009
  • Tracking our energy use using software provided by Perillon
  • AP Environmental Science students are analyzing LA's energy use to help them design and start initiatives to lower LA's carbon footprint

What is Happening Today?

 

  • Alliance for Climate Education presented to LA in September
  • Rachel Niemoller ’10 and Alex Thornton ’12 attended the Green Cup Challenge Kickoff Conference at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn.
  • AP Environmental Science classes are begining to analyize LA's historical energy data using Perillon software.
  • The Go Green Club introduced The Green Cup Challenge to the LA community.
  • LA's Participation in the Green Cup Challenge started Monday, January 25th
  • LA is celebrating Earth Day Week by having a Green Fair.  Every day from April 19th - 22nd during lunch the fair will offer ideas of how to be more Green. The fair will focus on the products we buy, the clothes we wear, the food we eat and our daily habits.

Did You Know?

 

  • Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 and was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.
  • Earth Day was formed to help people become more aware of and inspired by the Earth’s environment.
  • The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, as a grassroots environmental movement to have a "teach-in" day about the environment.
  • The United Nations also celebrates Earth Day but in connection with the Spring Equinox on March 20. The first Earth Day was held on March 20 was in 1970.
  • Today, Earth Day is celebrated by over 500 million people in 175 nations.

Many local communities also have Earth Day events. Check your local area to find out what is happening.

 

If you can not attend an event, here are some things to consider doing at home.

 

You could also pick up trash along the roadways, plant a tree or garden, or take a hike or paddle.

 

Just remember this day is about enjoying the Earth and the environment.
