Leadership

Every student at LA will make countless personal discoveries, big and
small, just by participating actively in school life. Many also
discover an interest in and talent for leading others-thanks to the
many opportunities for leadership at LA.
Each year, about 16
students are chosen by the residential directors to serve as proctors
to work with dorm parents in each dormitory. They serve as liaisons
between the students and the faculty who supervise in the dorm. With
the faculty, these student leaders share in the responsibility for the
general well-being of the dorm.
Peer counselors (also about 16
each year) are selected by the previous year's peer counselors to work
closely with the school counselor as caregivers and trouble-shooters.
They are invaluable in being tremendously helpful in identifying
important issues and helping students find whatever resources necessary
for them to receive the support they need.
After communicating
with new students over the summer, as well as receiving their own
training, peer counselor are joined by proctors, faculty, and staff
members at Windsor Mountain International (Windsor, NH) to shepherd new
students through their 2-day orientation. Throughout the year, these
students share the day-to-day work of closely monitoring the well-being
of students at LA and reinforcing the messages introduced during
orientation.
Students elect class officers, representatives to
student government, and the Faculty/Student Senate, which deliberates
over changes in the rules that shape student life (contained in Omnibus Lucet). Student government organizes and plans weekend activities as well as special events throughout the year.
Other opportunities to lead include captaining a sports team, leading the Multicultural Alliance, or managing WRLA, The Lawrencian, The Spectrum, or participating on any number of committees, including some that were formed as a result of student initiatives.
