The Arts at LA
Beginning in the Ninth Grade Program, amazing things happen in the arts at Lawrence Academy because you are encouraged by both teachers and your classmates to take constructive risks. Focused on fundamentals and free at LA to explore, you learn how to express what you feel and think about the world while learning the interpretive, technical, and expressive skills you need to create meaningful works of art.
Again and again, we call on you to find your own "voice"-your own unique artistic and intellectual identities-and to use this voice and your own experience to create original art. You are encouraged to become creative problem-solvers, to respond emotionally and thoughtfully to the work of other artists, and to develop the technique necessary to communicate your ideas artistically.
At LA, your work is exhibited in a wide variety of contexts, including end-of-term dance, music, theatre, and visual arts shows. You may view our most recent Arts Week here. Our teaching and performance facilities include a recently renovated 525-seat theatre, a Black Box dance theatre, a 100-seat recital hall, a music technology lab and adjacent recording studio, and a digital photography/video lab. Lawrence's more motivated arts students matriculate at some of the most competitive college arts programs in the country; some do so after spending a year in the Independent Immersion Program.
The menu items at the left will give you specific information on our four arts disciplines. If you wish to go directly to the arts course descriptions please view the Arts Curriculum page.
