Athletics / ISL
Athletics are vibrant at Lawrence Academy and offer the opportunity for the
individual or the team to set and meet high standards. Lawrence Academy belongs to
the 16-school Independent School League, whose members share a
common philosophy that highlights friendly competition
and sportsmanship. We have outstanding coaches—almost all are teachers—and our
top priority is the safety of our student athletes.
All of our students
participate in the afternoon program and most select a variety of team sports
offered each season. Lawrence Academy offers a range of sports at several levels
so that students can compete intensely in their favorite sport or try one that
is totally new. Whatever your ability and your goals, you will find coaches at
LA who will help you improve your skills. At LA you may participate in our
outdoors program, dance program, or join the stage crew to
meet the sports requirement. If you already have risen
to elite levels in an individual sport not offered at LA, permission may be
granted for you to pursue that sport in an “independent."
Year after year, some
student athletes at LA attract the attention of coaches of Division I programs
across the country. Recent alums can be found on rosters for the New Jersey
Nets, Boston College, UNH, Brown, Harvard, and Colorado. Historically, ice
hockey players—boys and girls —have graduated from LA, after helping win
numerous ISL titles, to play in the most competitive programs in the nation.
Recently, LA had six graduates skating in the two different Frozen Four
championships! Nine graduates have played for pro teams, and six have competed
for Olympic gold (twice in ice hockey for Laurie Baker ’95)
