Academic Departments & Curriculum

At Lawrence Academy, our independent high school here in Groton, Massachusetts, the academic program challenges students to take ownership of their learning and develop the confidence to persevere in the face of challenging problems. Our prep school students develop skills and gain knowledge with the understanding that their intelligence is not fixed. We expect students become persistent problem-solvers by gaining an understanding of content and thinking creatively about what they examine. We ask students to discover what inspires them and to exploit those interests on behalf of others.

Our students and their teachers live and learn together in an environment characterized by what John Dewey called a both/and paradigm in which students are expected to think things together rather than apart. To this end our students learn to:

  • work independently and collaboratively
  • understand failure and strive for success
  • value structure and exercise creativity
  • articulate personal views and develop empathy
  • pursue curiosity and practice reasoning

The faculty at Lawrence Academy design curriculum and implement pedagogy with the intent of helping students mature into confident, self-aware, problems solvers who experience education as a means for realizing their individual potential as responsible citizens with the capacity to positively impact others and the environment.
