Athletic Requirements

(NOTE: The above requirements apply even when a student is restricted for medical reasons. In such cases, a student may participate as a manager or as a scorekeeper.)

Use the links below to view available sports by season as well as to see what other activities are offered. Each sports description will indicate whether the activity is in the "A credit" or "B credit" category.

Fall

Cross Country
Cross Country is for both girls and boys and is offered at the varsity and JV levels. The students currently in the program range from competitive runners to students just trying to get in shape! Practices are every day with a Saturday commitment. (A credit)

Varsity Field Hockey
The field hockey program is for girls only. The coaches typically keep 15-18 of the best players. Anyone can try out but there are cuts. Practice is everyday with a Saturday commitment. (A credit)

JV Field Hockey
The JV field hockey team roster ranges from 15-18 students. Anyone can try out for JV Field Hockey. Practice is every day with a Saturday commitment. (A credit)

Football
Football is for boys only and is offered at the varsity and JV levels. The roster will range from 35-55 students. There is a JV schedule for the less experienced players, however, the team practices as a single unit. (A credit)

Mountain Biking
Students will ride trails daily in the Greater Groton area and compete in a several competitive races in New England. There will be some Saturday commitments. (A credit)

Outdoors
There are only 12 roster spaces for the fall outdoors. The fall outdoors program focuses on rock climbing, canoeing, and camping. There are two mandatory weekend camp outs that are required. (A credit)

Varsity Soccer
There is a boys and a girls varsity soccer team. The coaches typically keep 18-22 of the best players for the varsity roster. Anyone can try out but there are cuts. Practice is every day with a Saturday commitment. (A credit)

JV Soccer
There is a boys and a girls JV soccer team. Roster size is similar to the varsity. Anyone can try out for JV soccer. Practice is every day with a Saturday commitment. (A credit)

Third’s Soccer
There is a boys and a girls III’s soccer team. The teams consist of freshman and sophomores. Occasionally juniors will be allowed to participate, however seniors are not allowed. The roster ranges from 13-22 students. Practice is every day with some Saturday commitments. (A credit)

Volleyball
There are two volleyball teams for the girls (Varsity and JV). Teams practice and play six days a week. (A credit)

Dance
All students may try out for dance and they will be grouped according to ability; Varsity, JV and III’s. Dance practices are every weekday and may extend into the evening. There are two evening performances at the end of the season. (A credit)

Stage Crew
Stage crew meets every weekday. Long hours are required in the weeks preceding the shows. This program involves a lot of set production and manual labor. (A credit)

Theater
Open to anyone wishing to try out for the school production for the term. Productions will vary. Rehearsals will be held in the afternoon and will increase in time commitment during the weeks preceding the shows. (A credit)

Advanced Strength &Conditioning
This program meets 3 days a week (Tues., Wed. and Fri.) and is available to juniors or senior students only who will commit to participating in two seasons of varsity athletics in the school year. It will have restricted enrollment. (B credit)

Intramural Tennis
There are only 20 roster spaces for intramural tennis. The program is for inexperienced or novice athletes. The program meets five days a week with no Saturday commitment. Competitive tennis players in the spring may not participate according to ISL rules. (B credit)

Intramural Yoga
Yoga will be offered on an intramural basis this year. Interested students should expect to workout 5 days a week. Students are required to buy their own yoga mat. (B credit)

Team Manager
Students may sign up to be a manager for a team. Only two managers per a team and they must fulfill the two day a week fitness requirement in our program in addition to attending daily practices, including Saturday games. A student may only receive credit for one season per year as a manager. (A credit)

Independents
Students wishing to participate in an activity or sport that is not offered by Lawrence Academy may apply for a one term Independent. Students should obtain an application from the Athletic Office, complete it and obtain necessary signatures and return to the Athletic Director for approval. (B credit)

Sport Waivers
A sports waiver is available to those junior and senior students who are electing to take six classes or have challenging academic programs which include 3 Honor or AP courses. To apply, one must complete the necessary paperwork, participate in an afternoon fitness program, and obtain approval by the Athletic Advisory Committee. A junior or senior may only have one term of a Sports Waiver or Independent per year. (B credit)

Winter

Basketball
There are three levels (Varsity, JV, and III’s) for boys’ and girls’ basketball. Varsity and JV usually practice and play six times a week and thirds have limited Saturday commitments. Practices can run as late as 8:00 PM. (A credit)

Hockey
There are four hockey teams for boys and girls hockey players -(Varsity and JV). Practices and games usually are held six days a week and some practices can run as late as 9:00 PM. (A credit)

Wrestling
Wrestlers compete at both the varsity and junior varsity level, however, they practice together and travel together. Participants include accomplished wrestlers as well as those new to the sport. (A credit)

Alpine Ski Racing
Skiing has competitive teams for boys and girls and race every Wednesday, beginning after winter break, at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford, MA. Skiers will practice or race as often as five days a week and may include a weekend commitment. There is a charge associated with skiing to cover the cost of transportation and lift tickets. Competitive Squash
There will be a competitive co-ed team for students in grades 9-12. This Competitive co-ed team will be restricted to 12 participants and will practice at least 3-4 times per week and play on Saturdays at The Groton School. (A credit)

Intramural Squash
Squash will be offered as a co-ed intramural program this winter. Students will practice 3 times per week. Practices will take place at The Groton School on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. (B credit)

Dance
All students may try out for dance and they will be grouped according to ability; Varsity, JV and III’s. Dance practices are every weekday and may extend into the evening. There are two evening performance at the end of the season. (A credit)

Stage Crew
Works in conjunction with the theater production for the winter. The crew meets after school for usually four days a week in the early season and meets more frequently and for longer hours as the show nears at the end of the term. This program involves a lot of set production and manual labor. (A credit)

Theater
Actors for the winter will tryout for the winter production and receive afternoon activity credit. Rehearsals are held after school and on some weekends. For those actors who do not make the production, they should seek reassignment in the afternoon program. (A credit)

Intramural Yoga
Yoga will be offered on an intramural basis this year. Interested students should expect to workout 5 days a week. Students are required to buy their own yoga mat. (B credit)

Spring

Baseball
There are two levels for baseball, Varsity and JV. Both practice everyday and have Saturday commitments. (A credit)

Softball
There are two levels for softball, Varsity and JV. Both practice everyday and have Saturday commitments. (A credit)

Lacrosse
There are two levels for lacrosse for both boys and girls, Varsity and JV. Both teams practice every day and have Saturday commitments. (A credit)

Tennis
Tennis has two levels for both boys and girls, Varsity and JV. The teams practice each day and have matches during the week and on Saturday (A credit)

Golf
There are two options for golf, Co-ed Varsity and JV (restricted to 6 players on each team) . Varsity and JV practices or plays Monday through Friday. Due to golf course availability, several matches will be on non-traditional competition days. (A credit)

Intramural Golf
This is a co-ed program and is instructional in nature and meets five days per week at the Groton Pool and Golf Center. There is a cost associated with intramural golf of $75.00. You must have your own clubs. (B credit)

Outdoor Track and Field
This is a co-ed program and consists of both varsity and JV levels. Practices are held daily and meets will occur on Saturdays. Involves some travel to area tracks during the week for practice. (A credit)

Outdoors
There are only 12 roster spaces for the spring outdoors. Outdoors is a non-competitive afternoon alternative where you will go hiking and be taught canoeing and rock climbing skills. One day a week may be devoted to games such as ultimate Frisbee. Two weekend overnight trips are required. (A credit)

Dance
All students may try out for dance and they will be grouped according to ability; Varsity, JV and III’s. Dance practices are every weekday and may extend into the evening. There are two evening performances at the end of the season. (A credit)

Stage Crew
Works in conjunction with the theater department One Act Plays for the spring. The crew meets after school for usually four days a week in the early season and meets more frequently and for longer hours as the shows near the end of the term. Due to production needs, a limited number of spaces are available for the spring. This program involves a lot of set production and manual labor. (A credit)

This program meets 3 days a week (Tues., Wed. and Fri.) and is available to juniors or senior students only who will commit to participating in two seasons of varsity athletics in the school year. It will have restricted enrollment. (B credit)
