Dear Alumni & Friends,
With fall term exams finished and our students headed off for Thanksgiving break, LA has much to be thankful for. Even as the world faces such doubt and strife (see the latest edition of Dan Scheibe’s blog), our LA community carries on with the work and play of learning and inspiring the newest generation.
Come join us this weekend and support the boys’ varsity soccer and football teams as they move on in the New England Playoffs! Boys’ Soccer will play Kimball Union Academy at 12:30 PM on Shumway Field after defeating Pomfret School on Wednesday in overtime. LA, as the ISL football champion, was awarded a New England Bowl Game and will play Suffield Academy at 1:00 PM on Murbach Field.
As always, exam week has been a welcome change-of-pace at LA. The campus goes into a full-on academic mode, with students studying hard for one to two exams a day. Students compartmentalize their studies more during exams and get a chance to dig deeply into what they have learned all term and apply, express, and synthesize it. This year, departments added required extra-help sessions the day before their exam, and all teachers have offered “Office Hours” so that students can stop by to ask further questions and request even more help. Hands-on care and a thoughtful approach to encouraging kids to self-advocate is an LA trademark and a cornerstone of an LA education.
I hope your “exam-week” has finished up strongly and you are ready for Thanksgiving and family time.
From the hillside,
Assistant Head of School
BTW: Despite next week's break, there's already been so much activity on (and off) campus throughout November. Winterim Night ushered in "Winterim Season" and the Fall Arts Showcase provided ample opportunity for our students to shine. Last week, John Curran met with alumni at Boston's Hampshire House and an Alumni-sponsored food truck kept fans full during LA's ISL-clinching victory. Meanwhile our football and boys' soccer players (and college-bound senior athletes like Hannah Ghelfi, Brittany Colton, Gabby Reuter, and Eddy Fish) created consistent headlines. So, be sure to keep your browser locked on www.lacademy.edu for the latest news coming out of Groton.
