From an elm tree shaded hillside...

Dear Alumni and Friends,

We’re looking ahead to Founders’ Day (Oct. 24), the day which honors LA’s heritage. In 1992, as part of our bicentennial celebration, former Head of School Ben Williams chaired a committee to look at ways to celebrate our past. Founders’ Day was introduced to recognize stewardship of the school and contributions to the greater good.

Our three highest awards for service all have deep LA connections. Leaders like Albert Stone, Ronald Ansin, and Jeanne Lacroix Crocker have received our Founders’ Day Award for extraordinary service to the school, as have former faculty Rich and Edie Baker and Dick and Bev Jeffers.

On Founders’ Day, we also give the first of two annual Greater Good awards, conceived by Jay Dunn ’83. The first is awarded on Founders’ Day to a student who strives to use his or her education to benefit the greater good of humanity, and the second goes to a member of the alumni body and is presented at our spring Cum Laude ceremony.

Our third award for service, the Kathy Peabody Memorial Book Award, recognizes a non-teaching member of the faculty who helps to create a secure and positive environment in which all members of the community may achieve their best. Kevin McDonald ’70, another Founders’ Day Award recipient, established the book award to commemorate Mrs. Peabody, who had been dorm mother in Pillsbury House where he and his classmates lived while they were students at LA.

The day we celebrate what’s best in us is always a great day for LA. I’ll be back in touch again in November when we’re getting ready for final fall performances in the arts, athletics, and academics.
