Dear Alumni and Friends:

The advisor system at Lawrence Academy is a standout program that sets LA apart from its competition. Advisors meet with their advisees five days a week, three times in group meetings, and then twice a week at assembly. Advisors are the first point of contact with the school for parents, and advisors mentor, guide, and encourage students, while constantly keeping an eye on academic progress, health and wellness, and happiness. If an advisee wins an honor, advisors share in the celebration, and if the advisee gets into a tough situation, the advisor is there to mentor and support.

When I started teaching Spanish at LA in 1983, I was assigned six freshman advisees. These boys stayed in my group for four years, and we became very close. All six navigated their way through LA, and while there were certainly bumps along the road, they all progressed and found success and happiness. On graduation day in June of 1987, I had no idea how hard saying goodbye to them would be. When I hit the handshaking line to say goodbye to seniors, I made it about halfway through before I came upon my advisees. I lost it. They lost it. The bond that we had formed was so powerful, it was overwhelming. Twenty-nine years later, we are all still in touch, and I am pleased to note that one of them is an LA Trustee.

The advisor program started in 1971, and if you ask LA grads from the last 45 years who their advisor was, they have a similar set of stories to tell. And when admissions visitors ask why the students at LA are so friendly and happy, the answer usually starts with an explanation of our advisor system.

BTW:
Last weekend, LA students boxed over 10,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now. This effort makes a huge difference and our community fully embraces this annual event. Check out the video! Finally, this coming Monday, January 18, both of LA's varsity basketball squads and many Spartan Nation fans, will head to downtown Boston to play in the TD Garden's Hoop Mountain Challenge. Varsity girls' play The Governor's Academy at 5:00 p.m., and the boys take on Brewster Academy at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be on sale through gametime Monday at the TD Garden Box Office, or you may purchase them online, at all Ticketmaster Outlets, or by calling 800-745-3000. Enjoy a recap of the 2015 event on YouTube. We hope to see you there! Lawrence Academy is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter M. Groffman will be on campus working with the LA science department and students, February 3-5, 2016. A professor with the City University of New York and Brooklyn College, Dr. Groffman’s visit to campus is made possible by the J. William Mees Visiting Scholar Endowment Fund. Full information on Dr. Groffman's public presentation is linked here. Finally, if you haven’t already done so, please be sure to cast your nominations for our three spring awards: the Athletic Hall of Fame, the Alumni Faculty Appreciation Award, and the Greater Good Award, when you have a chance.
